The Office for National Statistics has released figures this week showing a sharp increase in rape crime in the UK.
During 2014 the records show a 26% increase in rape incidents being reported to the police as compared to the same period in 2013. The increase is thought to be related to greater public awareness and openness when handling matters such as rape or abuse. This follows a series of high profile court cases which have brought to the fore the subject of rape and child abuse. Victims or rather "survivors" of such crimes can now speak without fear of being ignored and this has had a huge impact on the police figures.
