I was sexually abused when I was a child by a neighbour from the age of 7 until I was 11. I felt like I couldn't tell anyone and suffered with both my physical and mental health. When I was 45 I suffered a mild stoke and had a break down. With the support of my wife I went to the police and reported the abuse in January 2014. The police were fantastic. They treat me with dignity and respect and arranged for me to see a counsellor, but the main thing was they believed me. My perpetrator went to Crown Court in September, he had 20 charges against him , 14 which related to me the others relating to two other victims. We could hardly believe it when he pleaded guilty to all of the charges and was sentenced to six and a half years in prison. I would urge any victims of historical abuse to come forward, you will be listened to and it's never too late.
